Photographic Story Board

The film starts off with a Panning shot of the local surroundings. The use of the panning shot establishes location. Where the opening is being set. The scene will use Non-Diagetic sound e.g. Cars honking and passing by and also the use of soundtrack. The scene would also use Natural Ambient Lighting. I got the idea of the use of the panning shot from Psycho, in the beginning where it showed off the tall buildings of Phoenix, Arizona.

The screenshot shows the tall buildings from a Bird's eye point of view

For my second Shot, I have two different options.

My first option is Kirsty walking towards the bridge and with her disappearing into a Vanishing Point.

1st Option - Kirsty starting really close to the screen and as she walks on, she disappears into a Vanishing Point.

Another option would be Kirsty coming in from a distance and getting closer to the screen.

A long shot - Kirsty Getting closer and closer.

I got the idea of this from the ending of The Third Man, where Anna was walking from Harry's funeral

Anna started walking from a great distance and kept getting closer and closer.

For my Third shot I would be using an Over the Shoulder shot as Kirsty starts walking to the bridge.

There are two options for my fourth shot.

One of the options is having a  Tracking shot of Kirsty as she is walking across the bridge.

Another option would be Close-Up shots of Kirsty, while she is texting and walking on the bridge.

The shot uses a close-up shot of Kirsty with a phone on her hand and a watch on her wrist. I got  the idea from the beginning of The Third Man where it shows the people in the black market selling watches.

It would be something similar to this.

There is also another close-up shot of her face, which allows the audience to identify with her emotion.

The scene then cuts to another Over The Shoulder Shot of Mary walking through the park.

The film then cuts to a High Angle shot of Jane lying on a park bench, showing her being weak and vulnerable because her character is already dead.

The scene then cuts to Close Up Shots of Mary looking at Jane and stroking her face. The use of the close up shots shows her emotion, showing she's scared and seeing if she's still alive.

The scene then cuts into a Long Shot of Mary looking around to see if anyone is within the area. The use of the Long Shot shows isolation because no one is there to help her.

The scene then cuts into a Low Angle Shot of Harry (the perpetrator) looking at Mary. The Low Angle shows the shift of power between Mary and Harry.

The scene then cuts to a Tilt Shot of Harry standing and looking at Mary. The use of the Tilt Shot shows disorientation and kind of like a nightmare. I got this idea from The Third Man , when Harry Lime's character was first introduced.

My Tilt Shot

Harry Lime's Titlt Shot in his introduction

The scene then cuts into a Close Up Shot of Harry looking at Mary with a sinister look.

The scene then cuts into a Close Up Shot of Harry getting to Mary. I got the idea of this at the beginning of Kill Bill Vol.1 when Bill was walking to the Bride.

My Close Up shot of the feet walking to Mary.

The shot of Bill walking to the Bride

The scene then cuts into a High Angle shot of Mary with the perpetrator right int front of her, revealing her fate.

Changes to the Cast - AGAIN!

I have reviewed my footage for the past week. I have been doing some thinking and I thought that the film isn't reaching its full potential. I have then decided to re-cast Mary's role, who is now being played by Kirsty Swift. From what I have been seeing for the past 4 months, I think that Kirsty's acting skills, personality and characteristics is what the opening needs to make sure that the film reaches its full potential.

The Third Man - Sewer Chase

I am going to analyse the mise-en-scene of the sewer chase on The Third Man

Analyse from 3:23 to 11:00

Sound

The scene uses a mixture of Diagetic and Non-Diagetic sounds. The use of the War Sirens (heard from the clip above) shows as if there is a rush to get things done, which in this case would be the Higher authority figure trying to catch Harry Lime. It also uses other sounds such as footsteps and water flowing through, it shows as if Harry Lime is trapped and that no matter what he does, the police would still be able to catch him.

Lighting

The scene uses Non-Ambient lighting throughout this scene. It uses Chiaroscuro lighting, to increase suspense throughout the scene. The use of non-ambient lighting shows fear, especially on harry because it exposes what type of a criminal he is and that this time he's not going to get away for what he has done.

Vanishing Point

Carol Reed has used Vanishing Point in the sewer chase to show what type of person Harry is. He just comes and goes. One police office finds him and then he runs off and disappear.

Claustrophobic Spaces

Carol Reed has used Claustrophobic spaces to portray as if the world is creeping back in to Harry Lime and that his time is up and that wherever he goes, he is not going to get away and that sooner or later he would be seen by the police and that his days in hiding are over.

Generic conventions used

The sewer chase uses generic conventions found in Thriller Films. Harry Lime is seen as this criminal, as the police is chasing him for what he has done, and the scene also uses Underground sewers with wet narrow alleyways, which is a generic location for a Thriller Film, especially for a Film Noir.

Costume Ideas - Matthew

Matthew would be seen as this Modern and good-looking person. His costume is a lot different than  Mary because they are both cast into two different social groups. Mary is this Sophisticated and elegant person while Matthew is the opposite which shows that opposites attract and that people shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. The costume idea came from Step Up, where both characters are from different social groups and they still fell in love.

Shooting Map - The Next One

This is the shooting Map of my Thriller Opening. Which shows where I've filmed my Opening and which shots I have used. It is my very first Shooting Map, so sorry if I make any mistakes.

Intertextuality

I am going to analyse why Quentin Tarantino used the soundtrack from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and other Intertextual References from other Films in Kill Bill Vol. 2

The finale of The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

Intertextual references can help give meaning to key scenes in a film, which is why Quentin Tarantino has used  the soundtrack from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Quentin Tarantino used the Intertextual reference when The Bride had a fight off with Bud (Bill's Brother) and then Bud ended up burying her down and The Bride managing to get out of the coffin.

Quentin Tarantino first used the Intertextual Reference when The Bride had her fight with Bud

In this first scene Quentin Tarantino has made two Intertextual References from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

His first Intertextual Reference was Bud. His character shows similarity with the character Tuco (The Ugly).
Bud's appearance gives us this impression that he is the opposite his older brother. He is seen as this scruffy and a really messy person while his brother is shown as powerful and has a good control over his life because Bud lives in his trailer.

Another reference that Tarantino makes is the sound used in both clips. Which could be heard throughout this first clip and the second clip.

Tarantino makes another Intertextual Reference. This is when The Bride has been buried and she then makes her way out of the coffin.

Quentin Tarantino has used a variety of Intertextual References. This includes the Music, Characters, Locations and Costumes.

The first Intertextual reference Quentin Tarantino has used didn't actually come from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly but it's mostly used in Thriller films such as The Third Man. Quentin Tarantino has used generic conventions of a Thriller Film throughout his movies. In this particular one he had used Claustrophobic locations and then in turn took them to the extreme.

Quentin Tarantion, then again makes another reference with the costume. The Bride is seen wearing Cowboy/Cowgirl Boots. This reference show that she is conforming with the characteristics and looks of a Cowgirl. Which brings me to another Intertextual reference that Tarantino made, that The Bride is like Blondie, No matter what the problem is she is able to pick herself up and get herself sorted.

Another reference Tarantino uses is location. The scene is set in a Cemetery, where it is Isolated and away from any prying eyes. The use of the cemetery increases suspense because no one sees what's happening.

Footage of Thriller Opening

This is all the footage shot for my Thriller Opening. The footage mostly consists of some shots being repeatedly shot. Since we have filmed my teacher has had a look at my work on my Blog and it has since given me ideas on how I could improve the footage I already have, which includes having another cliffhanger and converting the film to Black and White. I have also watched the footage over and over and I noticed that I broke the 180 degree rule, which is another reason to re-shoot most of the scenes. We would re-shoot everything as soon as possible.

Costume Ideas - Harry

For Harry,  I choose a 50's style suit, which would also show sophistication and enigma because it illustrates as if he is hiding something. This type of suit reminds me of Inspector Goole from J. Priestly's play of An Inspector Calls.

Costume Ideas - Mary

I  had an idea that Mary would look at this innocent yet quirky person and is also sophistic-ally dressed, with elegance and also very groomed. An example of this would be the character of Audrey Hepburn when she starred in the iconic film Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Evidence of researching soundtrack

I have been researching some soundtracks. But none of them have fit to the type of thriller I would like to produce. But I have found a dramatic soundtrack but unfortunately I am unable to embed it to the blog and won't be heard until all the editing has been finished. But I do have a screenshot from mobygratis.com stating that I am allowed to use the soundtrack requested.

Cast for Thriller Opening

Hollie Beattie - Mary
Jake Seaman - Matthew
Austen Nuttall - Harry

This is the final cast for my Thriller Opening.  There are a variety of reasons why I chose these actors/actress for my Thriller Opening.

Hollie Beattie playing the role of Mary

I have chosen Hollie Beattie for the role of Mary for a few reasons. I have seen Hollie's acting skills before and whatever role she is given she portrays it very well. In the beginning of my planning Hollie wasn't the first choice, but after comparing both of the actresses acting skills my final choice was Hollie.

Jake Seaman playing the role of Matthew

The casting of Jake's character was a last minute change. I had another actress, who was suppose to be the friend of Mary, but her schedule clashed with other logistics, which made her unavailable. So I thought about instead Mary finding her Friend, she would find her Boyfriend. I figured that if she found her Boyfriend then that would have more significant meaning.

Austen Nuttall playing the role of Harry

It was really tough finding an actor for this role. I have found some actors that found the fit but wasn't able to film and vice versa. I then asked Austen (another student from my Media Studies Class) to give me a sinister look, which was suitable enough to what I was looking for in my opening.

G321: Pitch For Opening to New Thriller Film - (IMPROVED)

Working Title

The Working Title of our film is called The Next One  It is called The Next One because it involves a person seeing whether or not the main character (Hollie) would be murdered.

Type of Thriller

The opening of our Thriller would be a mixed cross between a Noir Thriller and a Crime Thriller because the film would be in Black and White. Also, the thriller involves murder, the enigma of who did it.

When Set

The film would be set in the Modern times (2010 and beyond) The locations have streetlamps, which the country didn't have much in the 1930's plus we also use modern day technologies such as a BlackBerry Smartphone.

Primary Locations

My Thriller Opening would be filmed in St. Bishop's Bridge located in Riverside Road and Elm Hill. The pictures are in my previous posts.

Narrative Structure

A girl is walking her way to the center of the city, she texts her boyfriend, saying that she is on her way to meet up with him. He then takes a shortcut through an alleyway so she could get to her boyfriend on time. She then tries to ring him up and then co-incidentally she hears a ringing that might've been familiar to her and then as she walks through, she finds her boyfriend unconscious on the wet shiny streets. She then goes to him slowly, while at the same time being emotionally traumatised seeing if he is still breathing or is he dead. She then sees a mysterious figure looking at her, but the girl is so weak, emotionally scared and traumatised at the same time she didn't know what to do. The film then ends with the mysterious figure walking to her and the screen goes black with her breathing.

Characters

Character 1
Name : Mary - Girlfriend
Age: 16
Gender: Female

Character 2
Name: Matthew - Boyfriend
Age: 16
Gender: Male

Character 3
Name: Harry - Mysterious Figure
Age: 16/17
Gender: Male

Costume

Harry would be wearing a black Coat, Trousers, Shoes and a Black Hat. His inspiration came from when we watched The Third Man in class, this is when Harry Lime first appeared and it shows that there is this enigma (who is he, what is he doing in this scene). Mary would be wearing would be wearing a coat along with some accessories such as a Watch and a Mobile phone. Matthew would be wearing nearly the same type of clothing as Harry.

Soundtrack Ideas

I have been searching for a suitable soundtrack to go with my Thriller Opening. The opening would have a mixture of Diagetic and Non-Diagetic sounds which would be the soundtrack and breathing sounds made by the character.

Cliffhanger at the end of the sequence

The cliffhanger at the end would involve all of the three characters. Harry would be on the floor unconscious and Mary is emotionally traumatised and scared. Harry would then make his move, he could hurt Mary or even kill her.

Representation of the place

The bridge at the beginning of the opening represents the entrance of hell. An example of this would be from Essex Boys when Billy was going through the tunnel and it shows that he is going somewhere bad and it illustrates that he might not come back if he doesn't act as soon as possible.

Sources of Ideas

Our sources of Ideas originated from a mixture of both Independent and Mainstream films such as:
  • Psycho (1960)
  • Essex Boys (2000)
  • The Third Man (1949)
How the sequence establishes the Thriller Genre

Our opening establishes the Thriller Genre because it has the following Thriller conventions. These include:
  • Innocent Victims
  • Characters with Dark Pasts - Harry

Changes in Cast

For the past few days I have had to make a few cast changes for a variety of reasons. Hollie Beattie would still remain as the Main Character. Phoebe Newell has been replaced by Hannah Willis, which in turn have had to be replaced by Jake Seaman, which resulted in a change of the plot. Originally, Hollie will be finding would be finding her friend dead but instead she would find her Boyfriend dead. This change would fit much better because the character would be much more meaningful. The mysterious character would be played by Austen Nuttall

Costume Ideas - Watch

There would also be a use of a watch, what the Main Character (Hollie) would be wearing. With the use of the watch it would help unravel what happend in a chronological order, when and where things a happend. A example of this would be from Heavenly Creatures when both Pauline and Juliet are waiting to kill Pauline's Mother, Honora.
